It wasn’t loud.
It wasn’t dramatic.
There were no fireworks, no angels descending, no praise music swelling in the background.
Just me… in the mess.
Me… at the end of myself.
Me… whispering a tired, terrified, “Okay, God. I’ll trust You.”
That yes didn’t feel holy at the time. It felt like survival. Like surrender because I had nothing left to give. But looking back now? That quiet yes was the doorway to everything.
The Myth of the Big, Bold Obedience
We talk so much about “leaps of faith” and “radical trust” — and sometimes, yes, God asks us to step out in boldness. But what about the moments when you don’t even have the strength to stand, let alone leap?
What about the quiet, barely-there, barely-holding-on moments when all you can do is whisper,
“Okay. I’m done fighting You.”
That’s what this moment was for me. Not a leap. Not a roar.
Just a release.
A laying down.
A holy exhale.
A Surrender That Felt Like a Breakdown
It didn’t look like a mountaintop moment.
It didn’t happen in a church pew, or during a quiet time, or after some sermon that softened me.
It happened in a closet.
Holding a newborn.
Heart pounding.
Praying I’d survive the next few minutes.
There was no music, no peace, no sense of clarity — just fear.
And the crushing weight of realizing: I can’t do this anymore.
I wasn’t whispering “yes” to God because I had finally figured it all out.
I was whispering it because I had nothing left.
No plan.
No peace.
No protection.
Just this tiny baby girl depending on me to be brave when I felt anything but.
I remember closing the door behind me, sinking to the floor, and whispering a prayer so quiet I wasn’t even sure it counted:
“God… if You’re here, I need You. I can’t do this. I don’t know what to do. But I can’t stay.”
That was my yes.
Not to healing.
Not to safety.
Not even to clarity.
Just to movement.
Just to surrender.
Just to Him.
And somehow, even in that terrifying moment, I felt covered. Not fixed. Not fearless. Just… covered. Like God wrapped Himself around me and said, “You don’t have to know how. Just move. I’ve got you.”
I didn’t feel brave.
I felt broken.
But that whisper — that trembling “okay” — became the moment everything began to shift.
Because God doesn’t need your polished praise.
He just wants your permission.
And that day, I gave it to Him — not loudly, not perfectly, but fully.
And He hasn’t stopped moving in me since.
What Shifted After That Whisper
I didn’t wake up the next morning with a perfect life. But something had shifted.
My feet felt planted, even in pain.
My spirit felt steadier, even in sorrow.
And my heart, which had felt numb for so long, started to beat again with hope.
That one yes…
That tired, quiet yes…
It opened the floodgates of healing.
For the One Holding Back Their Yes
If you’re reading this and still holding your breath, still holding the pieces of your life like they’re too fragile to hand over — I get it. I’ve been there. But I’m telling you, there’s something powerful that happens when you loosen your grip and whisper:
“Okay, God. You can have it.”
You don’t need a grand gesture.
You don’t need the perfect prayer.
You don’t need to feel ready.
You just need a moment of surrender. And God? He can do everything with that.
“Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” – Luke 1:38
With you in the mess,
Courtney
