Let’s just say it out loud: life gets messy.

There are days when prayer feels easy—like it flows right out of your heart and into God’s hands.

And then there are the other days.

The ones where you sit in silence, unsure of what to say. The ones where your child is asking questions you can’t answer. The holidays that feel like they highlight what’s missing. The moments when you feel like you’ve said the same prayer so many times you wonder if God’s tired of hearing it.

This post is for those days.
For the single mom who’s tired. Tender. Torn.
Here are 5 short, honest prayers for when you don’t know what to say—but still want God close.

1. When You’re Dreading the Custody Exchange

Jesus, You know how hard this is for me. You see the ache I hide behind my smile. Please cover my child with peace, and cover me with strength. Let this exchange be smooth, protected, and drama-free. Be what I can’t be in the moments I’m not there. And please guard her heart on both sides of the door.

2. When You’re Grieving the Family You Imagined

God, I didn’t picture it this way. And some days, the loss hits deeper than words. I lay down every “what could’ve been” and ask You to fill the empty spaces with something even better—Your peace, Your presence, and Your purpose. Redeem the broken places. Remind me You’re still writing this story.

3. When Your Child Is Asking Hard Questions

Lord, give me wisdom beyond what I know. Help me answer with truth and tenderness. Protect their innocence while planting strength in their spirit. When I don’t have the answers, help me point them to You—the One who sees it all and never lies.

4. When You Feel Alone on a Holiday

Jesus, this day feels heavy. Everyone else seems surrounded—and I feel set aside. Would You sit with me in this? Help me see small glimpses of joy. Be my company, my comfort, and my constant. Thank You that I’m never actually alone.

5. When You’re Too Numb to Pray

God, I don’t have words today. I don’t have energy. I don’t even know what to ask for. But You see my heart. You know what I need before I speak. So I’ll just breathe here in Your presence. And I’ll trust that You’re still listening—even to my silence.

If you’ve ever felt like your prayers are too messy, too tired, or too late—let this remind you: God doesn’t need eloquence. He just wants your honesty.

With you in the mess,
Courtney
